Role Summary:
The Senior Analyst – SQL Server DBA is responsible for day-to-day database administration tasks including installation, configuration, monitoring, backup/recovery, and performance tuning of SQL Server environments hosted on-premises and on Azure IaaS/PaaS. The candidate will work under the guidance of senior team members and actively contribute to cloud migration and modernization initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Install, configure, and maintain SQL Server instances (2016, 2017, 2019, 2022) on Windows Server.
Monitor database health, availability, and performance using SQL Server Agent, DMVs, and Azure Monitor.
Perform scheduled and ad-hoc database backups validate and test restore procedures.
Manage database users, logins, roles, and permissions following the principle of least privilege.
Execute patching and cumulative update (CU) cycles for SQL Server instances.
Troubleshoot blocking, deadlocks, and slow-running queries using execution plans and wait statistics.
Support Azure SQL IaaS VM administration — starting/stopping VMs, disk expansion, NIC configuration.
Raise and track incidents in ITSM tools (ServiceNow) adhere to SLA targets.
Document runbooks, SOPs, and change records for all DBA activities.
Participate in on-call rotation for P1/P2 incident response.
Technical Skills & Requirements
SQL Server 2016/2017/2019/2022 installation and configuration.
T-SQL scripting — queries, stored procedures, functions, triggers.
Backup and restore strategies — full, differential, transaction log, COPY ONLY.
High Availability: Always On Availability Groups, Failover Cluster Instances (FCI).
Database monitoring using DMVs, SQL Server Profiler, and Extended Events.
Windows Server administration basics — services, event logs, disk/storage management.
Azure IaaS fundamentals — SQL Server on Azure VM, Azure Portal navigation.
Familiarity with Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance.
Experience with ITSM tools — ServiceNow ticket management.
Basic PowerShell scripting for automation of DBA tasks.
Azure IaaS & PaaS Administration
Azure IaaS: Manage SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines — VM sizing, availability sets, proximity placement groups, and Azure site recovery.
Azure PaaS: Administer Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance — elastic pools, service tiers, DTU/vCore sizing.
Configure and monitor Azure Database for SQL MI — failover groups, auto-failover, read replicas.
Manage Azure Storage accounts for database backups — LRS/GRS/ZRS replication, lifecycle policies, soft delete.
Use Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Azure Advisor for performance and health insights.
Implement Azure Private Endpoints and VNet service endpoints for secure database connectivity.
Manage Azure Key Vault integration for TDE keys, column encryption, and Always Encrypted.
Configure Azure Backup for SQL on IaaS VMs and Azure SQL Managed Instance backup policies.
Work with Azure NSGs, firewalls, and network topology to ensure secure DB access.
Participate in lift-and-shift and cloud migration projects — assessment, sizing, and post-migration validation.
Certifications (Preferred)
Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) — preferred.
Microsoft SQL Server certifications (DP-300 associate level) — preferred.
ITIL Foundation — preferred.
Soft Skills
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work in rotational shifts including weekends and on-call.
Team player with a willingness to learn and adapt.
Attention to detail and methodical approach to problem solving.
Basic understanding of ITIL processes — incident, change, and problem management.
